Wait, That's Not Right.. Songs You Didn't Realise Were Dirty

Remember when I wrote about "That Time I... Won Tickets to See O-Town"? Of course you do. So that means you also remember the reaction that was had at learning that the song "Liquid Dreams" wasn't about water. Well, Nini commented on that post and mentioned that she had a similar reaction to the Spice Girls song "2become1." That got me thinking about all the other songs that had alternate meanings to me when I was a kid.

With the help of Nini, and in celebration of Throwback Thursday, we've come up with our own list of those songs!

Songs You Didn't Realise Were Dirty (when you were a kid)

1. Squeeze Toy - Boomtang Boys

"All my teachers told me it was wrong
for little girls to play with a toy so long
but now its time to put my toys away
and look for fun in a different way
cuz i'm ready for something new
and if you're lucky it could be you"

A "toy"? She's looking for "fun in a different way"?
Say what?!

2. Get Down - B4-4

"If you get down on me, I'll get down on you.
I will do anything that you want me to.
It's a game of give and take to make it through.
So if you get down on me, I'll get down on you tonight."

This band may be too Canadian for most of you, but I jammed out to them a lot.
Clearly, I had no idea what "get down" meant.

3. It Wasn't Me - Shaggy

"Honey came in and she caught me red-handed,
Creeping with the girl next door.
Picture this, we were both butt-naked, banging on bathroom floor."

I don't know how I didn't know what this meant.
I must have thought by "banging" they were doing some artistic dance moves.. on the bathroom floor.

4. Everybody - Backstreet Boys

"Am I sexual?
Yeah.
Am I everything you need?
You better rock your body now."

I love BSB and I always will, but I never realised the meaning behind those lyrics until I was much older (like, last week).

This can be argued that "rock your body" doesn't mean what I think it means..

5. I'm A Slave 4 You - Britney Spears

"I'm a slave for you. (Here we go now)
I cannot hold it; I cannot control it.
I'm a slave for you. (Here we go) I won't deny it, (Yeah)
I'm not trying to hide it."

Maybe I thought she really wanted to wash his dishes or something?
I did feel uncomfortable when my dad would walk in the room when I was watching that music video though.

6. Hot in Herre - Nelly

"Give that man what he askin for
Cuz I feel like bustin loose and I feel like touchin you
And cant nobody stop the juice so baby tell me whats the use"

I knew this song was dirty, but I thought it was "oh, they're taking off all their clothes because they're hot and now they're naked in the same room with each other" kind of dirty. I really didn't realise the context of the lyrics. "Can't stop the juice"? Ew.

7. Promiscuous Girl - Nelly Furtado ft. Timberland

"Promiscuous girl,
You're teasing me.
You know what I want,
And I got what you need."

I think I was old enough when this song came out to know what it was about, but it still didn't stop me from singing it all the time as if it were completely innocent.

8. Lady Marmalade - Christina Aguilera ft. Mya, Pink, Lil Kim, Missy Elliot

"Voulez vous coucher avec moi ce soir"

Okay, really, all the lines in this song are dirty. The french line is a polite way of asking someone to sleep with you. But, I was young and naive and sang my little heart out in my living room to this song.

Then I saw the music video and thought the lyrics might mean things I didn't understand...

Any songs you listened to as a kid that you now realise are dirty?

  2. My favourite is B4-4. Me and my sister think it's hilarious that we were running around singing this when we were 12. The best line: I'm going to make you come tonight....over to my house. So dirty....I wonder what our parents thought of songs like this?

  3. Haha this made me laugh out loud. There are so many songs I used to sings that looking back, were totally inappropriate. Too funny, I was listening to the BSB one the other day and that same line stuck out to me, I mean, I knew the lyrics...but again, had no idea what it meant!

  7. I LOVED this post!! Haha like Nini said, BSB's "If you want it to be good girl (get yourself a bad boy)" was also conspicuously dirty :P. And Shaggy's was hilarious--good job including it! I loved that song as a kid and then realized it was dirrrty :). Lastly, "Bad Touch" by the Bloodhound Gang was fine for a naive kid who lived in a Spanish-speaking country but then I moved here, listened closer to the lyrics, and thought, "NOOO WAY!" hehe.

  11. Ok not only songs but have you ever gone back and watched old movies too and been like what the heck this is not the same movie I watched growing up. For example the movie Clueless blew my mind when I watched it again a couple years ago. They talk about sex and virginity and they get high and when I was younger I seriously had no idea what was going on.
