Random Acts of Honesty

I take the subway daily, to and from work. On my way home from work yesterday, I witnessed something that I just had to share with the Blogger World.

Before I get into detail, you should know that our subways get very packed during rush hour and we're all crammed in like sardines.

Here's an example I stole got from an article discussing how our transit system is too crowded:

See what I mean?

Now for the story.

Yesterday, while on the subway, I watched as a girl next to me bent down to pick something up off the floor. I noticed she had picked up a token (subway fare; the equivalent of $3). She turned around and offered it to the guy beside her saying, "You dropped this."

His response was, "Actually, I didn't." He paused, then looked at the gentleman beside him, "Here, you must have dropped it."

Another, "No, it isn't mine" response. He passed it to the girl next to him, who passed to me, while I passed it on to someone else. It was almost like a game of a hot potato. After coming to the conclusion that the token didn't seem to belong to anyone on that subway car, some finally told the last person holding it that they might as well keep it. Which then turned into it, "No, it's okay. You can have it." Eventually, the token was given to the girl who found it in the first place.

I was shocked, and quite frankly, pleased with the amount of people who could honestly say that the token did not belong to them. It's not often that you see such displays of honesty but it's quite refreshing when you do.

  2. This is such a wonderful story! I bet it was an awesome site to see. I'm trying to picture how it would play out in my mind and it makes me smile. I'm always pleased to hear the stories of someone finding cash on the ground or somewhere and reporting it. Thats an even easier way to just find the money and keep it. No one watching or anything.
