That Time I... Won Tickets to See O-Town

The New Kids On The Block concert I just went to was a blast from my past. It got me thinking about another concert I went to back in the 90's.

This one takes me bad to grade eight. I was the nerdy kid, with big glasses, messy hair and an obsession with Ashley Angel, Jacob Underwood and Making of the Band. When my dad told me about a contest in our local newspaper to win tickets to an O-Town concert, I knew I had to enter. Enter, I did. And won! To be specific I won front row tickets for me and seven friends to see O-Town, live in concert!

My only problem? I didn't have seven friends (see: nerd, glasses, messy hair). I had two. Now I had to find five more people. Whatever will I do?!

The moment I walked into class and announced that I had tickets to see O-Town, suddenly, everyone wanted to be my new BFF. Oh boy!

So, how did I choose who the lucky five to join me and my two friends would be? I decided to choose the only girls that didn't pick me at any time throughout the school year. Ha! Take that bullies!

Moving on.

The day of the concert comes and we're the happiest eight girls you'd ever seen. Truth be told, the seats weren't actually front row. They were front-row balcony. Close enough!

Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures from this concert, but I promise you, I'm not cat-fishing. This really is a true story. I even had my picture posted in my local newspaper with the caption, "Contest winner and her friends" (something along those lines). The picture was terrible. I had red-eye underneath my thick rimmed glasses and I was wearing a big puffy winter jacket. I destroyed the copy of the picture that we had in our home. Like I said, it was terrible.

Oh and those friends? Yeah, I don't talk to any of them now. Let's just say, those were not the greatest years of my life. But that concert sure was awesome!

Then I grew up and this happened...

Ah, the ignorance of a 12-year-old.

Now I know you're wondering... what do the boys look like now?

The boys posted this on Instagram not too long ago, after talks of them reuniting.

You might have noticed something...

Where the heck is Ashley?

Well, he declined the offer for a comeback tour (boo!).

In case you're wondering though, he looks like this now:

Yeah, he's still gorgeous.

Now go visit Emily!

  1. Ashley is a guy!?

    Haha. Liquid dreams.....

What about that time you almost won tickets to World War Z? ;)

Being eaten alive by mosquitoes here. Hope you're having a better time than I am.

  2. Lol on finding out about liquid dreams meaning. The other day I heard this Spice Girls song (2become1) and I had the same reaction. I couldn't believe I use to jam that as a kid.

  7. I'm not going to lie, I don't know any of the bands you mentioned. When I was younger all I was really allowed to listen to was Christian music. Backstreet Boys and N*Sync were apparently really popular...but I had no idea! Haha. I'll have to post about my first concert some time. It was ZoeGirl and Jump5...both Christian bands, hahaha.

  8. Oh my god, I had completely forgotten about O-town. Ashley is a sexy dad. Jealous. I think we might have had very similar extremely puffy coats. Mine was powder blue though, so maybe that's even more embarrassing? Were the girls you picked to go with you super nice to you for the rest of the year? Or only till after the concert was over? xx

  9. Ahhh o-town haha I remember they did a concert in my city, but only for the high school that raised enough money in coins. It was an all girl school that won. I wish you would have kept the picture hahaha!

  10. Hahaha I LOVED that song as a kid, too! OMG it was so good. Then I grew up (or moved here--I have yet to find out what the culprit was) and found out the meaning and suddenly stopped singing it out loud. Same thing w/that Discovery Channel song! (>>Which btw it's a great workout jam as long as you ignore the lyrics, I've found.)

Thanks for allowing me to recall a cool part from my childhood, girl :).

  12. I didn't even realize New Kids were in Toronto until I saw Donnie tweet about it the other night. I went to see them when they first reunited and it was one of the best nights of my life! I've loved them since I was, like, six, so getting to see them all those years later was AMAZING. I LOVED O-Town! I'm so jealous you got to see them! I remember seeing those contests back in the day for O-Town, BSB, etc., and thinking I desperately wanted to win one but they were all 'take X number of friends' and I didn't have that many friends either!
