To Help or Not Help?

I get super nervous when I see a blind person on the subway platform. One wrong step and they fall into the abyss of the subway tracks. So, when I saw a blind person on the subway platform this morning, who seemed to be having difficulty figuring out where to go, I offered to help him.

He rudely responded, "I don't need no help!"

Now, I'm a pretty sensitive girl. This doesn't mean I burst into tears upon hearing this (maybe just a little), but I was definitely offended.

My biggest problem? This isn't the first time I've been blown off when trying to help someone.

I once ran ahead someone in a wheelchair to open the door for him. Instead of saying thank you, he told me off.

Don't even get me started on the times I've been told off for offering my seat to an older person on the subway (or mistaking a woman for being pregnant when she wasn't. Opps).

When it seems I'm getting told off more than being shown appreciation for what I thought was a good deed, it makes it hard for me to want to continue to offer help in the future.

What's your take on this?
Has this happened to you?
Would you/Do you offer help to those that you believe need it?

Just because no good post goes without some kind of picture..
My life right now.
Wow Wow Wednesday with This Girls Life

  1. first that e -card- yes. second, i am at a loss for this as well. sometimes i do and then I feel like it was the wrong move or they tell me it was. or if i don't i feel bad about it. I think even if they get mad it's ok bc one out of 5 youre doing something right!

  2. Wow, that doesn't sound like a whole lot of niceness going on out there. I think that some people are desensitized to kindness because of how they are constantly treated, be it ignored, mocked, overly babied, or any other condescending behavior. This makes it difficult to accept help graciously. I think that you're a good person. Keep up your polite and kind behavior. If nothing else, you know that you are trying your best to make the world a better place.

    Cheers!

  4. I love the e-card!!! And, I have to agree with Natashya. Take it from someone whose needed help all her life. When your made fun of or ignored, its difficult when someone actually offers something. The guy on the subway tracks is shocking. For goodness sake, I cant even figure out where to go or read the sings in a subway station and I'm not totally blind! Was he an older person? He might have experienced so many people only doing nice things because they feel sorry for him. Because I need help, I love helping people and never hesitate when I see someone in need. The only thing that makes me angry though? When people dont say thank you when I hold a door pen. Some of them are on the phone and just walk through like they are supposed to be waited on. My dad taught me this lesson along time ago and I do it whenever I"m in this situation. Even if they dont say thank you, I still say your welcome. At least I know that I was being nice.

  5. HAHA E-cards are awesome! As for the main point of the post. It's hard to tell. OF the times that I tried being nice and giving up my seat or opening the doors for someone I haven't encountered a bad response like you have. But the only thing that comes up to my mind is that maybe they are frustrated with their 'situation' and they just take out their frustration on whoever tries to help them? Don't take it personally. I'm sure one day someone will actually appreciate your kindness.

  6. The world needs more people like you. Seriously. I say stick to your kind, sweet, helpful ways and the world will become a better place. Clearly you've just run into a few rude people, I admire you for what you did :)

  7. I am such a softy-I would definitely burst into tears too. Being that I am going to school to be a nurse, I have gotten over this sensitivity a little since I will definitely be dealing with crabby (and rightfully so) patients in pain. And I literally just laughed out loud to your Friday comic....lololol :) I hope you are having a better Wednesday than that!

Also, I'd like to invite you- I am hosting a HUGE collaborative giveaway on my blog next month. It's only $5 to join and you will not only get your face and blog linked up on all the posts with the giveaway form but you will also get ALL of your social media attached in the Rafflecopter form for people to follow for entries! Let me know in an email if you are interested :) I'd love to have you!

  8. ahhh this is frustrating! i always get annoyed if i hold a door open for someone and either they don't acknowledge it at all (as if i was supposed to do it) or a stream of others go through it too while i stand there like a fool. it really is hard to want to help people when they're just rude to you. arrrg!

  9. You're the better person for offering help. If it were me, I'd continue offering because you know never know when there is 1 person that truly needs you that day. I hope those jerks feel awful for making you feel awful!

  10. I guess some people are like that, too proud to ask help. At least, you tried. Don't tire of doing kind deeds. You must have just met the gruff ones. Keep doing it and you just might meet the ones who do know how to appreciate help.

  11. Like others have said here, I would continue helping. You've run into some people who might have been having bad days or simply don't won't help. They are probably more frustrated at their situation than they are at you.

  12. Love the ecard! Ugghhh, how rude! I can't believe people could be so ignorant when you're trying to help them! I'm so sorry!! I definitely have had people not say thank you when I hold the door for them. It ticks me off!
