13 Things 'Girls' Gets Right About Being In Your 20s

I've never seen the show "Girls" but I came across this article and was impressed with how accurate it was (for the most part). So, I felt compared to share it.

Note: this was taken from the Huffington Post. This list is not my own. The original article included fun GIFs (which are clips from the show); you can see them - and read the original article - here!

I totally may have said this once or twice before.

Here are 13 things "Girls" gets right about being in your 20s:

1. You have panic attacks about the future.

2. Being happy for your friends can be hard ...

3.... Especially when your own life is in shambles.

4. There's a lot of weird sex.

5. Your love life can be a big, blurry mess.

6. Almost everything feels like the end of the world.

7. Jobs can be really boring.

8. You grow apart from your friends.

9. There aren't responsible, loving adults protecting you anymore.

10. You use social media to make your life look more put together than it is.

11. You over-analyze everything.

12. You experience way too much self-doubt.

13. But at the end of the day, it's so much fun.

What do you think? Do you agree or disagree?

Confession & HIMYM Rumour?

It's Wednesday, and I actually remembered that Kathy has her awesome confess sesh on Wednesdays, so I'm finally joining in again!

I confess... I think I'm addicted to Plants vs. Zombies 2. I'm constantly playing it on my phone. Constantly. The sad part? I've finished the game and I'm just playing endless mode.

I confess... I'm always afraid of offending people. I really, really don't want to offend anyone. Unless you've offended me. If you've done it by accident, fine, no harm done. If you've done it by accident more than once, you're going to hear it from me.

I confess... I'm tired of complaining about being tired of the cold but I'm still going to complain anyway.

I confess... I realised that Saint Patrick's Day is in two weeks. I also realised that two years ago, I spent Saint Patrick's Day on a patio. A patio! Oh how I wish it warms up enough for that this year.

I confess... I'm still pretty freaked out/confused by what happened at the gym on Monday (although all your comments gave me laughs throughout the day, so thank you) that after the gym last night, I went home to shower. Yes, I sat on the subway smelling like sweat until I got home, but I did not care.

I confess... there's a pretty big rumour going around about how How I Met Your Mother will end. Since I'm a huge skeptic, I don't believe it. Have you heard it? What do you think? (If you want to read the theory, click here. Be warned, it's full of spoilers! Also, if you haven't seen the latest episode - which aired Monday, March 3, 2014 - you probably shouldn't read it at all.)

You're Really Flexible

"You're really flexible," the random woman at the gym tells me. She's cornered me in the locker room.

I clutch my towel, making sure it's on tight. I try to stare directly at her eyes as I notice she seems to be missing a towel of her own.

"I'm sorry?" I say.

"I saw how you lifted your leg up really high. It was pretty impressive."

What the hell is she talking about?

"What are you talking about?" I ask.

"In the shower. You lifted your leg."

"You mean when I was washing my feet?"

"Oh, is that were you were doing? I can't reach my feet so I don't wash them."

I'm grossed out and then it hits me, "Wait, you were watching me shower?"

"That sounds creepy when you put it that way. I had just noticed through my shower stall that you were very bendy and I was admiring your form."

That's the less creepy way of telling me you're a creep?

"Um, thanks? I better get changed now..." I say and walk away.

I'll never be able to take a shower at the gym now without wondering if someone is watching me. Thanks, creepy lady.

I Can't Date You Because of Your Name

When trying to find an ecard to add to this post, I came across this.
Unrelated, but still funny.
And true.
The other day, someone was telling me about a couple they know. They mentioned they thought it was strange that both people in the relationship have the same name.

Wait, what?

"The guy's name is Jesse and the girl's name is Jessie. With an I."

This got me thinking about my own unisex name. If you've ever read the bottom of my 'About' section then you already know that I hate the fact that in response to me introducing myself as "Alex" I often get told, "That's a boys name." For arguments sake, let me reiterate: Alex is a unisex name. It is short for either Alexander or Alexandra. One is the male version of the name. The other is the female version of the name. Understand? Great. Moving on.

Since I already have too many apprehensions with my name as it is, I don't think it would be possible for me to ever date someone who has the same name as me (this is all in the hypothetical off chance that Andrew and I don't live happily ever after, of course).

I realise that this is all kinds of unfair. A persons name does not define them. But, yelling out my own name seems kind of strange (take that however you want).

Could you date someone if their name was the same as yours? Or have I just gone crazy?

Valentine's Day is a Crock

Or not.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: I don't do Valentine's Day (Amanda knows what I'm talking about).

For starters, it shouldn't be labelled as a "holiday" since I still have to go into work. What kind of holiday forces you to go into work?

Oh, that's right, the fake kind of holiday.

The one that was created just so companies could make some extra money.

I got an email from Apple the other day, reminding me that "love is in the air" so I should consider purchasing an iPad Air to get to my "valentine's heart." I'm sorry, what? You want me to spend $519 (plus tax) on a device to give to my "valentine"? Have you been smoking whatever Rob Ford has been on lately? That's insane.

Truth be told, I'm probably just a terrible girlfriend. Every year, I remind Andrew that I'm not doing Valentine's Day, so he shouldn't expect anything from me (or give me anything) and every year, he seems a bit disappointed. Last year, (when the only person who read my blog was Kat) I mentioned that, to not disappoint Andrew, I got in the Valentine's Day spirit and bought him cupcakes. I took a few bites of one and then felt sick. Basically, I think I was being punished for trying to give in to the ridiculousness that is a corporate (Hallmark) holiday.

The only upside to Valentine's Day this year? It falls on Friday. A Friday right before a long weekend. Boo-yah. Thank you, Ontario (and other provinces which commemorate Family Day).

 Do you do Valentine's Day?

Stop Making Your Engagement Annoying

If you haven't seen it already, there's a picture that was posted on Reddit that is surfacing all over the internet of a girl's reaction to her three girlfriends getting engaged. For clarification, here's the photo:

Some say the girl in this photo could be annoyed at how much money she now has to spend. This could also be a possibility. This is my take on the photo.
The general reaction to this girl has been extremely positive. Many of the comments (including those found on sites re-posting the picture) state that she is "perfection," "the hottest one in the picture" and many commenters state they want to marry her/become her new BFF. And really, who can blame them? Heck, I want to be friends with her now too.

When you get engaged, it's an exciting moment. I know that when I get engaged, I'll be posting my ring on Instagram and blogging about it just like everyone else. You're entitled to that, right? It's a huge moment in your life and you're excited to share it with your friends and family. I get it. But, then there becomes a point where talking about your engagement is no longer fun and exciting for everyone else. It becomes narcissistic, annoying and you begin to look like a showoff.

This picture is the perfect example of that.

As my friend Mike stated, "'Everyone point and smile at these three chicks!' IS AN ANNOYING PHOTO."

It's true.

You're engaged and we're happy for you. But, you don't need to constantly remind everyone that you're engaged. We'll be reminded of that ourselves when we attend your engagement party, your bridal shower, when we receive the save-the-date, the invite and, most importantly, when we attend your wedding. Posting ridiculous photos on Instagram and Facebook of you posing with your ring isn't necessary (this is different than official engagement photos. Post those wherever you want. After all, you paid for them).

Just for the record ladies, the "Omg, I'm so happy and I want to share my happiness with everyone" picture is quite different than the, "Omg, I need everyone to see this diamond at many different angles" picture. One says genuine. The other says showoff. We can read right through them.

Posed pictures like these (particularly when taken months after the fact. Recent photos can sometimes have some merit) have made engagements less about "I really love this person and I'm excited to share my life with them" and more about "look at my shiny new ring." Wonderful stories like Helene's about engagement rings being passed down from family members are becoming rarer as couples compete to have bigger diamonds and thicker bands. I'm not saying that this is the case across the board but it definitely applies to more and more couples in our generation.

With this picture in mind, this is my appeal to stop making engagements a competition and celebrate what an engagement ring represents: a symbol of love and devotion.

Having a bigger ring does not equate to having a better marriage.

10 Everyday Things I Need

As many are spending this week reflecting on what they're thankful for, I'm sharing ten day-to-day things I wouldn't know how to live without.

Ha.
1. Showers

I'm a little OCD when it comes to bathing. In the summer, I sometimes take three showers a day. I can't start my morning without a shower and it's one of the most relaxing things to end my day with.

2. Toothpaste

Like I'm OCD with bathing, I need to brush my teeth multiple times a day. I even have a toothbrush and toothpaste at my desk at work. I always carry gum on me and sometimes mouthwash.

3. My cellphone

It's kind of sad how dependent I've become with my phone. I'd go crazy if I had to give my phone up for a few days. I know I'm lucky to even have a cellphone though.

4. The Internet

Remember when I went without Internet for a month? That was hard. It also taught me how reliant I am on it. If I didn't have data on my phone and Internet at work, I don't know what I would have done (serious first world problems).

5. Fresh air

I love being outside. Okay, maybe not when it's freezing outside. But, I love being able to go for a walk after work, take the dog to the park and go out whenever I want.

6. Work

Work is one of those things that everyone, at some point, says they wish they didn't have to go to. Myself included. But, when I had a day off work to wait for the technician to come set up the Internet, I was bored to tears. I need to go to work to stay busy, make a contribution to society and, of course, bring home the bacon (mmm...bacon).

7. Music

This one is obvious.

8. My bed

Remember when sleepovers were the coolest thing ever? The moment I moved out and bought my own bed, I stopped having sleepovers. I need my bed for a good night's sleep. My bed. Not yours. Mine.

9. Public transportation

I complain about public transportation. A lot. It's crowded. It smells. There's always delays. The people on it can be annoying and rude. But, its saved me over $1000 a year on parking, gas and insurance expenses. It's a finance saver for sure.

10. Water

Can you imagine a day without water? I can't. It's my go-to drink and a main ingredient in any dish I make. Oh and it allows me to have those showers I love so much.

What everyday things could you not live without?

Sometimes You Shouldn't Take That Selfie

We've all done it. We've all taken a photo of ourselves with the camera facing us or a mirror. Just because we've all done it though, doesn't mean we should.

Take it from these girls: always be aware of your surroundings.

I'd also like to take a moment to thank the Internet for always providing a source of entertainment and a learning experience for us all.

Selfies work better when you the camera faces you.
Is that her DAD in the background?

Let's all take pictures of ourselves next to someone who is on the can; specifically during that time of the month.

Bottom right hand corner: is that what I think it is?
Have you ever taken a selfie you shouldn't have?
