Did You Know... Fourth of July Fun Facts!

To show my support for my neighbours to the south, I did my own research on the Fourth of July and compiled a few fun facts about it!

1. According to Time magazine, the Fourth of July had been celebrated as early as 1777, however it wasn't made official until 1870. (source)

2. According to Time magazine, Americans consume about 155 million hot dogs on July 4th! (source)

3. Benjamin Fraklin was unimpressed with the bald eagle being chosen as the symbol of the American nation. He believed the turkey was a far "more respectable" bird. (source)

4. Instead of actually ringing it, the Liberty Bell gets tapped 13 times to signal other bells to start ringing. The bell has no been rung since 1846, due to concerns of it cracking. (source)

5. Historians believe that the Declaration was actually signed on August 2nd, 1776 (not on July 4th). (source)


6. Of the $3.6 million spent on the purchase of U.S. flags, $3.3 million was spent on U.S. flags made in China. (Census, 2011) (source)

7. Each year, 213 pounds of fireworks are purchased in the U.S. and the annual fireworks industry revenue is $940 million, according to National Fire Protection Association. (source)
